TLDR A medication called sodium valproate likely caused a girl's hair to become kinky and dry.
In 2001, a case study reported a 6-year-old girl who developed acquired progressive kinking hair syndrome, a rare pilar dysplasia, likely induced by sodium valproate. This was the first case of its kind. The girl's hair became kinky, lusterless, dry, and exhibited an aspect of pseudo-pili torti under light microscopy. The report suggested that sodium valproate should be considered as a potential cause of kinky hair syndrome, as five other cases of valproate-induced pilar dysplasia had been reported, albeit without clinical descriptions.
