TLDR Sesame and pumpkin seed oil can effectively regrow hair in alopecia areata.
In a study conducted from September 2017 to September 2018, 40 patients with patchy alopecia areata were treated with either pumpkin seed oil or sesame oil. The study found that after three months of treatment, 46.6% of patches treated with pumpkin seed oil and 39.1% of patches treated with sesame oil showed complete hair regrowth. Both treatments were statistically significant (P <0.00006 for pumpkin seed oil and P <0.000003 for sesame oil), but there was no significant difference between the two (P=0.24). The study concluded that both pumpkin seed oil and sesame oil are effective and safe topical treatments for alopecia areata.
