TLDR People with alopecia areata have higher levels of EGF in their blood than healthy people.
The study, conducted three years ago, evaluated serum levels of epidermal growth factor (EGF) in 60 patients with alopecia areata, a common cause of non-scarring alopecia, and compared them with 25 healthy controls. The researchers used an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to measure the EGF concentrations. The results showed that serum levels of EGF were higher in patients with alopecia areata than in the healthy controls. This suggests that increased serum levels of EGF may play a role in the pathogenesis of alopecia areata.
