TLDR People with alopecia areata often have low vitamin D levels, which may worsen their hair loss.
This cross-sectional observational study involved 40 untreated cases of alopecia areata (AA) and 40 age and sex-matched healthy controls, aged 18-45 years. The study found that the mean 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D] level in AA patients was 12.45±4.80 ng/ml, which is deficient, compared to the control group's level of 33.73±10.02ng/ml, which is normal. This difference was statistically significant (p≤0.0001). Furthermore, a strong negative correlation was observed between the Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) score and 25(OH)D level (-0.32), which was also statistically significant (p=0.0462). The study concluded that vitamin D levels are either insufficient or deficient in AA patients and that these levels negatively correlate with the severity of SALT score.
