TLDR Using a method of stretching skin multiple times can help cover large bald spots on the scalp, but it takes a long time and isn't good for kids.
In 2019, a study was conducted on two patients with large hairless scalp lesions. The researchers used a serial resurfacing method involving re-expansion of the flap with a tissue expander, as a single expansion was insufficient to cover the entire defect. The results were positive, suggesting that scalp resurfacing by serial tissue expansion can be used for extensive lesions. However, this method had limitations, including a long total treatment time with multiple operations over 2 years, and it was not suitable for pediatric patients.
