TLDR Selenium levels are similar in healthy people from both high and low NPC risk areas.
The study measured selenium (Se) levels in the blood and hair of healthy individuals from high and low nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) risk areas in Guangdong province, using a modified fluorescence spectrophotometry method. The results showed no significant differences in Se levels between individuals from high-risk areas (Foshan and Shao-ching) and low-risk areas (Shantou and Meixian). Additionally, factors such as age, sex, and residence did not affect Se levels. Previous findings indicated that NPC patients had lower Se levels compared to healthy individuals, suggesting that reduced Se levels in NPC patients were likely a result of the disease rather than a contributing factor to its development.
