TLDR A woman got melanoma on her scalp after anti-hair loss treatment with injections.
In this letter to the editor, the authors presented a case of a 49-year-old woman who developed metastatic malignant melanoma in an area of the scalp previously treated with anti-hair loss mesotherapy. The patient had been suffering from hair loss and underwent mesotherapy, which included injections of a cosmetic solution with growth factors and stem cell extract. Although her hair loss reduced after the treatment, she later presented with an enlarging nodule in the treated area, which was diagnosed as melanoma arising in a congenital nevus that neither she nor the physician were aware of prior to the treatment. The melanoma was excised with a safety margin and sentinel lymph node biopsy showed no metastasis. The patient was treated with adjuvant immunotherapy and developed a satellite metastasis, which was also excised, and at the time of reporting, she was recurrence-free. The authors highlighted the need for careful examination of the area for mesotherapy with a focus on pigment nevi, given the poorer survival rates for scalp melanoma and the unknown safety profile of mesotherapy procedures.
