Sarcoidosis in Polo Ponies: Case Study of Argentine-Cross Breeds

Imad Ibrahim Ali Al-Sultan, Fawzia Jassim Shalsh
This case study focuses on equine sarcoid, the most common tumor in horses, particularly in Argentine-cross polo ponies. Six types of sarcoids are identified based on appearance and behavior: occult, verrucous, nodular, fibroblastic, mixed, and malevolent. The study involved physical examinations conducted 8-10 months after the ponies exhibited over-reaching while galloping. Histopathological analysis revealed hyperkeratosis, hyperplastic changes in hair follicles, and deep rete pegs in the dermis, alongside interlacing fibrous connective tissue and spindle-shaped fibrocytes, which are characteristic of sarcoid histopathology.
