Role of nutritional supplements in selected dermatological disorders: A review
September 2021
in “Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology”
TLDR Some diets and supplements might help with skin disorders, but their effectiveness varies and more research is needed.
The document reviews the impact of nutritional supplements on various skin disorders. For psoriasis, a gluten-free diet, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin D supplementation can potentially improve symptoms. In atopic dermatitis, the role of diet is controversial, but probiotics and early complementary feeding may be beneficial. A low-histamine or pseudoallergen-free diet may help with chronic spontaneous urticaria. A gluten-free diet may be beneficial in autoimmune blistering diseases, especially in dermatitis herpetiformis. For vitiligo, a gluten-free diet, fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamin B12, folic acid, and vitamin D may improve symptoms. However, the effectiveness of these dietary interventions varies among individuals and more research is needed to establish definitive guidelines.
