TLDR Facial hair is crucial for transgender men's gender identity and transition.
This study surveyed 444 transmen to understand the importance of facial hair in their gender identity and transition. The majority (86.0%) considered facial hair crucial for their gender identity, and 85.1% viewed it as critical for a successful gender transition. Despite testosterone therapy, most participants were dissatisfied with their facial hair density and distribution, desiring significant increases in hair density on the upper lip (66.7%) and chin, cheek, and jaw (60.7%). Many sought additional treatments, with topical minoxidil being the most common (35.4%). Concerns about product safety (77.3%) and efficacy (85.1%) were prevalent. The study highlights the need for dermatologists to be more involved in gender-affirming care for transmen.
