TLDR Oral terbinafine is more effective than griseofulvin for treating certain scalp infections in children.
This retrospective case series examined 20 pediatric patients diagnosed with tinea capitis caused by Trichophyton violaceum and Trichophyton soudanense. The study found that these infections often presented with non-inflammatory alopecia and were frequently accompanied by tinea faciei and tinea corporis, which is more common than previously reported. Treatment with terbinafine was successful in all 10 patients who received it, while 9 out of 10 patients failed initial treatment with griseofulvin but were subsequently cured with terbinafine. The study suggests that terbinafine may be more effective for these infections and recommends early fungal culture testing to guide treatment.
