TLDR The balance of thiol-disulfide in women with hair loss is affected but not damaged.
In 2019, three studies were conducted on the balance of thiol-disulfide in blood serum in women with telogen effluvium (TE), a common hair loss condition. The first study involved 60 women and found that the thiol-disulfide balance was significantly disrupted in women with TE, suggesting oxidative stress might play a role in the condition. The second study, involving 52 TE patients and 46 controls, found no statistical difference in native thiol, disulfide, and total thiol levels between the groups, indicating that oxidative stress may not play a significant role in TE. The third study, with an unspecified number of patients, found that cysteine, a component of vitamin B6, contributes to hair growth and that a decrease in ferritin could lead to hair loss. It also found a correlation between TE and thyroid disease, and that native and total thiols decrease in TE with age. However, it concluded that while thiol/disulfide homeostasis is affected in TE, the balance is not damaged.
