TLDR Using a handheld massage device during hair transplant significantly reduces pain for most patients.
In a study aimed at reducing pain during hair transplant lidocaine infiltration, a handheld massage device was used on over 3000 cases, showing significant pain reduction in the majority of patients. A pilot study with seven patients for the donor area and four for the hairline recipient area was conducted, where pain was graded on a linear analog scale. Results showed a 65-80% reduction of pain in five donor area patients, and a 95% reduction in two hairline recipient area patients. The average pain reduction was 78% in the donor and 49% in the recipient areas. The proposed mechanism is that vibratory stimulus from the device may modify pain impulses at the spinal level. The author, Dr. Bernard P. Nussbaum, suggests that vibratory stimulus warrants further investigation as a method to reduce cutaneous pain during hair transplantation procedures.
