TLDR European dermatological guidelines vary in quality, with some highly rated, but improvements are needed in applicability and consistency.
The document assessed the quality of 25 European Dermatology Forum (EDF) guidelines using the AGREE II instrument and found significant variability in their methodological and reporting quality. Seven guidelines were developed with the highest standard (S3), and these generally received the highest scores, particularly the guidelines on systemic treatment of psoriasis and treatment of androgenetic alopecia, with overall quality ratings of 88% and 83%, respectively. However, the study also found that high methodological quality did not always correlate with recommendations for use, as seen with the androgenetic alopecia guideline, which despite its high score, was recommended without modification by only 50% of assessors. The domains 'clarity of presentation' and 'scope and purpose' scored well across all guidelines, but 'applicability', 'stakeholder involvement', and 'editorial independence' were areas identified as needing improvement. The document concludes that there is a need for methodological harmonization and better reporting to ensure the practical value of the guidelines.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

There is no natural way to stop hair loss; pharmaceuticals like minoxidil, finasteride, and RU58841 are the only effective treatments. Some users report success with minoxidil and microneedling, while others discuss the side effects of finasteride.

Key treatments for hair preservation include minoxidil, finasteride/dutasteride, and microneedling, with additional options like specific shampoos, oils, biotin, zinc, tretinoin, clascoterone, and low-level laser therapy. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, reducing stress, and addressing nutrient deficiencies can also support hair health.

In this conversation, 4990 discussed various treatments for hair loss, including oral minoxidil, PRP, transplan, Jak inhibitors, Dutasteride, Finasteride, Olumiant, Ketoconazole, RU58841, microneedling, baricitinib, and CCCA. They recommended scalp biopsies in unclear cases of DUPA, twice weekly to twice daily shampooing for topical minoxidil users, and two sessions spaced one month apart with follow up at month three to determine the effectiveness of PRP treatment.
