TLDR Health care providers should address the emotional challenges of SLE patients with comprehensive care.
This study evaluated 378 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) to understand their psychosocial experiences and identify ethnic groups at higher risk for specific stressors. It found that over 60% of patients experienced chronic symptoms, with joint aches, fatigue, and muscle pain being common. Those with chronic symptoms or frequent flares had higher levels of depression (3.8 ± 1.1) and anxiety (3.7 ± 1.1). African-American and Hispanic patients reported greater unmet psychological needs. Weight gain and hair loss from medication were significant contributors to anxiety and despair. The study recommends that healthcare providers conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments and provide holistic care to address these psychological impacts.
