TLDR Pseudofolliculitis barbae is linked to higher rates of anxiety and depression.
This study analyzed the psychiatric comorbidities associated with pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) using data from the All of Us dataset, including 1,668 individuals (834 PFB cases and 834 controls). The research found significant associations between PFB and psychiatric conditions such as ADHD, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and major depressive disorder (MDD), with p-values of 0.009 and <0.001, respectively. Specifically, 23% of PFB patients had GAD compared to 10% of controls, and 48.4% had MDD compared to 26.3% of controls. However, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) was not significantly associated with PFB (p=0.15). The study highlights the need for further research on the impact of PFB severity and treatment on psychological outcomes.
