Platelet-Rich Plasma in the Treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia: An Equation with Many Unknowns

    Elena G. Pakhomova
TLDR PRP therapy can be effective for early-stage common hair loss, with most patients seeing improvement, but there are inconsistencies in treatment methods.
The document reviewed the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy in treating androgenetic alopecia (AGA), a common form of hair loss. It reported that PRP therapy is effective in the early stages of AGA, with approximately 80% of patients experiencing subjective improvement after 4-6 months. Studies, including systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials, indicated positive effects on hair density and thickness with minimal side effects, making PRP a safe and potentially effective alternative treatment. PRP was found to be superior to minoxidil in some aspects and showed improved results when combined with minoxidil or finasteride. However, the document highlighted issues such as variability in PRP preparation, platelet concentration, activation methods, and a lack of standardized clinical outcome assessment. Despite these challenges, the authors, with personal experience of over 4000 procedures including treatment of more than 300 men with AGA, supported PRP therapy as a standalone treatment or in combination with minoxidil, recommending injections every 4 weeks for at least 4 sessions.
