TLDR Schisandra nigra extract may help hair grow by stimulating cells and preventing hair follicle damage.
In the 2009 study, researchers found that Schisandra nigra extract significantly increased hair-fiber length in rat vibrissa follicles and induced anagen phase in C57BL/6 mice hair follicles. The extract also upregulated proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in the bulb matrix region and promoted the proliferation of dermal papilla cells. The hair growth promotion was attributed to the downregulation of transforming growth factor-ß2 (TGF-ß2), which is known to induce hair follicle regression. The study concluded that S. nigra extract could be a potential new therapeutic agent for hair growth, as it stimulates dermal papilla cell proliferation and may prevent apoptosis in hair follicles by downregulating TGF-β2. However, the exact mechanisms require further investigation.
