TLDR Older men with diabetes were more likely to get severe COVID-19 and needed treatments like antivirals for about 2-3 weeks.
The study conducted at Zahirah General Hospital involved 328 COVID-19 patients and aimed to determine their characteristics. The results showed that the majority of COVID-19 cases were late seniors (43%), males (52%), and experienced fever (97%). The most common comorbid disease was diabetes (56%). The treatment primarily involved antivirals and supplements (79%), with Avigan/favipiravir being the most used antiviral (42%). The average treatment duration was 14-21 days (41%). All COVID-19 patients with comorbidities showed lower than normal lymphocyte levels. The study concluded that late seniors, particularly men, are more susceptible to COVID-19 infection, and diabetes is the comorbid disease that causes the most severe COVID-19 symptoms and death.
