TLDR A woman's hair grew back after she stopped taking the Parkinson's disease medication pramipexole.
A 55-year-old woman with Parkinson's disease developed alopecia after taking pramipexole, a dopamine agonist. Initially, she was on pramipexole 0.5mg three times daily for 6 months, switched to ropinirole for 20 months, and then resumed pramipexole at a higher dosage of 1mg three times daily. Eight months after restarting pramipexole, she experienced gradual scalp hair loss over 2 months. A physical examination revealed diffuse noncicatricial hair loss with telogen hairs present upon hair pull tests, and a scalp biopsy confirmed telogen effluvium. Upon discontinuation of pramipexole, hair regrowth was observed within 4 months.
