TLDR Overweight and obese children in Bangladesh show signs of altered glucose metabolism, indicating a need for screening.
This study conducted at BSMMU, Dhaka, involved 100 overweight and obese children aged 5-16 years to assess the prevalence of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The study found that 77% of the participants were obese, and 23% were overweight, with a male predominance (62%). Insulin resistance was common, with 80% showing dyslipidemia and 76% exhibiting acanthosis nigricans. Impaired fasting glucose (IFG) was present in 4% of the children, and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in 7%, with 4% having both conditions. No cases of T2DM were detected. The study concluded that altered glucose metabolism was prevalent, suggesting the need for screening in this population.
