TLDR Older people with severe COVID-19, especially those with certain health conditions, are more likely to experience post-COVID syndrome.
This study conducted in North Kerala followed 800 COVID-19 patients for 6 months to determine the incidence, symptoms, and risk factors of post-COVID syndrome. The incidence of post-COVID syndrome among the study subjects was 42.2%. The relative risk for post-COVID syndrome was higher among participants aged over 60 years (RR-1.76), females (RR-1.07), those with comorbidities like diabetes (RR-1.28), hypertension (RR-1.06) and cardiac illness (RR-1.05), unvaccinated individuals (RR-1.21), and those with severe COVID-19 infection (1.20). There was a significant statistical association between the occurrence of post-COVID syndrome and the severity of COVID-19 disease (p=0.0046). The study concluded that post-COVID syndrome was more common in older people who had severe COVID-19 illness, and the incidence increases with severe COVID-19 illness.
