TLDR Poplar seed hair fibers could be an eco-friendly insulation for textiles.
The study from 2010 evaluated poplar seed hair fibers as a sustainable textile insulation material, comparing them to wool, down, and polyester. Poplar fibers were found to be finer, lighter, and had higher fill power than wool and down, with comparable thermal resistance to wool and polyester, but slightly less than down. They also demonstrated low moisture absorbency and maintained hydrophobic properties after treatments, suggesting good launderability. Although their short length prevents spinning into yarn, they are suitable for bulk insulation. The study concluded that poplar seed hair fibers show promise as an environmentally friendly insulator for textiles.
