TLDR Platelet-rich gel is a simpler, cheaper, and painless option for scalp defects, but tissue expansion offers better hair growth despite more pain.
This retrospective study compared platelet-rich gel (PRG) and external tissue expansion technique (TET) for treating scalp defects in 24 patients. PRG was found to be more cost-effective and simpler, with no significant change in pain levels, while TET resulted in better hair growth but increased postoperative pain. The mean wound healing time was shorter for TET (13.58 days) compared to PRG (25.00 days). Both methods showed no tissue depression or color change after healing. PRG offers a non-surgical, painless alternative with lower costs, whereas TET requires careful patient selection due to its surgical nature and associated pain.
