TLDR Women's minoxidil products cost more and are less effective than men's.
The study highlights the persistent "pink tax" in topical minoxidil products, with foams marketed to women being 20% more expensive than those for men, despite identical ingredients. Women are primarily offered the less effective 2% minoxidil, while men receive the more effective 5% concentration. This price disparity contributes to financial inequities and may hinder treatment access for women with androgenetic alopecia, which significantly impacts quality of life. The study analyzed 25 retailers, finding that women's foams cost an average of $30.43/60 mL compared to men's at $25.31/60 mL. The authors suggest dermatologists recommend 5% minoxidil for women due to its better efficacy and lower cost. Addressing these disparities is crucial for equitable healthcare access.
