TLDR The patient's hair has unique structural differences with alternating bright and dark bands.
The study focused on an 18-year-old male with pili annulati, a condition characterized by a "shagreened" appearance of the hair. Despite the unusual appearance, the hair was resistant and abundant. The patient had no family history of hair disease but had vitiligo. Microscopic analysis revealed alternate bright and dark bands on the hair shaft, with dark bands distributed throughout the cortex. Transmission electron microscopy showed wide holes in the hair cortex, both intracellularly and intercellularly, and occasional herniation of cell membranes. Scanning electron microscopy revealed dishomogeneity in the cuticular scales along the hair shaft, contrasting with the regular arrangement in normal hair. The study provided detailed microscopic observations of pili annulati, contributing to the understanding of this rare hair condition.
