TLDR The patient's hair has unique structural differences with alternating bright and dark bands.
An 18-year-old man presented with hair that had a "shagreened" appearance for 7 years, alongside a history of vitiligo. Examination revealed no abnormalities except for the unique hair appearance, characterized by alternating bright and dark bands every 0.5 mm, not found in normal hair. Microscopic analysis showed wide holes in the hair cortex, both intracellularly and intercellularly, with some areas filled with electron-dense material. Scanning electron microscopy revealed irregular cuticular scales along the hair shaft, unlike the regular arrangement in normal hair. The study highlighted the distinct structural differences in the patient's hair compared to normal controls.
