TLDR Dermatologists prefer minoxidil for mild female hair loss and a combination of PRP and minoxidil for severe cases, with a need for universal treatment guidelines.
The study aimed to understand the diagnosis and treatment patterns for female pattern hair loss (FPHL) among 80 consultant dermatologists. It found that FPHL commonly began between ages 20 to 30 and was often associated with psychological morbidity (96.25%). Minoxidil 5% was the preferred treatment for mild cases, while a combination of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and minoxidil was favored for severe cases. Treatment duration over 6 months was common, with flaking being the most reported side effect (27.5%). Non-compliance was mainly due to long treatment duration, cost, and side effects. The majority (90%) of dermatologists expressed the need for universal treatment guidelines in India.
