TLDR Red and black pop bean extracts protect against UV radiation and promote hair growth.
The study found that hydroalcoholic extracts from red and black Peruvian varieties of Phaseolus vulgaris L. (pop beans) had significant photoprotective effects against UVC radiation in mice, with black pop bean extract being particularly effective. These extracts reduced erythema and edema more effectively than a control sunscreen and were as effective as SPF 70 sunscreen in reducing photoaging over 30 days. Additionally, an unexpected hair growth-promoting effect was observed. The photoprotective properties were attributed to the antioxidant activity of polyphenolic compounds, suggesting that pop bean extracts could be a cost-effective ingredient for cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications to protect against UV radiation.
