TLDR The pony's skin condition improved significantly with prednisolone treatment.
A 26-year-old Hackney pony mare was diagnosed with pemphigus foliaceus after presenting with dermatologic issues that progressed to generalized exfoliative dermatitis with hair loss and crusting. Initial treatment with trimethoprim sulfa (TMS) was ineffective, and further examination revealed anemia of chronic inflammation and inflammatory skin disease. Skin biopsies confirmed pemphigus foliaceus, though it was unclear if it was idiopathic or a reaction to TMS. The mare was treated with prednisolone, leading to significant dermatological improvement within two weeks, and continued to do well on a tapering steroid dose.
