TLDR A woman with anorexia nervosa improved after treatment for pellagra, reminding doctors to check for this deficiency in patients with eating disorders.
The case report described a 28-year-old woman with anorexia nervosa who developed pellagra, a niacin (vitamin B3) deficiency, despite not being severely underweight. She showed symptoms such as neck erythema, diarrhea, and neurological issues. Clinically diagnosed, she quickly improved after receiving nicotinamide and tryptophan. The case underlines the necessity for doctors to consider pellagra in patients with eating disorders, regardless of their weight, as pellagra can occur in those with restrictive diets. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, and the report serves as a reminder that pellagra can still arise in contemporary settings. No study funding or conflicts of interest were reported.
