G42 Long Term Safety and Efficacy of Single Dose Parenteral Iron in Children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease in a Large Tertiary Centre
March 2018
TLDR Single-dose parenteral iron is safe and effective for children with inflammatory bowel disease and iron-deficiency anemia.
The study evaluated the long-term safety and efficacy of single-dose parenteral iron (IV iron maltoside 1000, Monofer) in 29 children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) who had iron-deficiency anaemia. The results showed a significant increase in mean haemoglobin levels by 6 weeks post-treatment, which remained stable up to 1 year. Only one patient experienced an acute allergic reaction, and two patients reported hair loss at 3 months, which was unlikely due to iron overload. No cases of dysmetabolic iron overload syndrome (DIOS) were observed, and liver function tests remained normal. The study concluded that parenteral iron was effective and safe for treating iron deficiency anaemia in children with IBD, with a low immediate reaction rate of 3.7%.
