TLDR Outpatient aesthetic and reconstructive surgeries are about equally profitable in Academic Health Centers and Ambulatory Surgery Centers when time is considered, but dedicated surgery centers are generally more profitable.
The document from 2006 analyzed the profitability of outpatient aesthetic and reconstructive surgeries in Academic Health Centers (AHCs) versus Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs). It concluded that both types of surgeries were similarly profitable when considering the duration of the case. The study used the average contribution margin per minute (CBM/min) as a standardized accounting measure and found that cases at ASCs had a higher average CBM/min ($28.59) compared to hospital-based facilities ($25.57), indicating that dedicated outpatient surgical facilities are generally more profitable for these procedures.
