P136 Psychological impact of hair loss in women: a qualitative systematic review

    Stuttee Mehra
TLDR Hair loss in women causes emotional distress and low self-esteem, but supportive interventions can help.
This systematic review examines the psychological impact of hair loss in women, highlighting significant emotional distress, reduced self-esteem, and social withdrawal. Analyzing 26 studies with 1,450 participants, it found that 78% of women experienced shame, anxiety, or depression, while 85% reported negative effects on self-image. Supportive interventions like cognitive behavioral therapy, peer support, and cosmetic solutions were effective, improving coping and confidence in 68% and 72% of participants, respectively. The review emphasizes the need for a multidisciplinary approach in dermatology clinics, integrating psychological support to enhance patient outcomes and quality of life. Recommendations include psychological assessments, integrated care models, and culturally sensitive interventions.
