TLDR OsPHR2 gene causes excessive phosphate in rice shoots, affecting plant growth and root development.
The study explored the role of the OsPHR2 gene in phosphate (Pi) starvation signaling and accumulation in rice plants. Overexpression of OsPHR2 led to excessive Pi accumulation in shoots, causing toxicity symptoms such as smaller plant size and reduced biomass under high Pi conditions. This overexpression also enhanced root elongation and root hair growth, indicating a role in altering root architecture. OsPHR2 upregulated several Pi transporters, particularly OsPT9, contributing to increased Pi translocation into shoots. The findings highlighted OsPHR2's significant role in regulating Pi homeostasis and response to Pi availability, offering insights for developing plants with improved Pi uptake efficiency.
