TLDR Adipose tissue changes in obesity can trigger stress in fat cells.
The study investigated the role of obesity-related factors in inducing endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in adipocytes. It found that glucose starvation and hypoxia, markers of adipose tissue remodeling in obesity, were physiological triggers of ER stress in in vitro differentiated 3T3-F442A and 3T3-L1 adipocytes. In contrast, high concentrations of saturated fatty acids, cholesterol, and proinflammatory cytokines did not induce ER stress in this model. The results suggested that the remodeling process of adipose tissue in obesity could play a central role in ER stress induction in adipocytes.
