TLDR New hair loss treatments show promise, but more research is needed to confirm their effectiveness.
The 2019 document reviewed novel treatments for hair loss, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP), low-level laser/light therapy (LLLT), mesotherapy, microneedling, and adipose-derived stem cell (ADSC) therapy. PRP showed a "clinically important difference" in hair growth in 40.6% to 54.7% of subjects in a trial with 64 patients, but results varied across studies. LLLT was found to increase hair density and had an excellent safety profile, with one study involving 110 male patients. Mesotherapy, particularly with dutasteride and vitamins, showed positive results, but also side effects like scalp abscesses and patchy alopecia. Microneedling combined with minoxidil was more effective than minoxidil alone in a study with 100 patients. ADSC therapy showed potential in promoting hair growth, with one trial of 20 patients indicating increased hair diameter and density. However, the document emphasized the need for larger, more controlled studies to fully assess the effectiveness of these treatments.
