TLDR Male pattern hair loss affects up to 80% of men due to genetics and hormone sensitivity.
Male pattern hair loss (MPHL) affected up to 80% of men over their lifetime and was characterized by a progressive reduction in hair diameter, length, and pigmentation, primarily in the frontal, temporal, and vertex areas of the scalp. This condition resulted from the effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a testosterone metabolite, on androgen-sensitive hair follicles. The sensitivity to androgens was genetically determined and depended on DHT production through 5-alpha reductase enzymes.
