TLDR Pregnant women often experience various skin changes, with pigment changes and stretch marks being most common.
The study conducted on 607 pregnant women in South India aimed to identify the frequency and pattern of skin changes during pregnancy. It found that physiological skin changes were universal, with pigmentary alterations occurring in 91.4% and striae in 79.7% of cases. Specific dermatoses included pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP) as the most common, affecting 14 women, followed by pruritus gravidarum in 5 cases. Other dermatoses influenced by pregnancy included candidal vaginitis (17 cases), acne vulgaris (15 cases), skin tags (15 cases), and eczemas (14 cases). The study highlighted the prevalence and variety of skin changes experienced by pregnant women.
