TLDR Podiatrists perform nearly all nail excisions in the US.
The study analyzed nail excision practice patterns in the US from 2012 to 2017 using Medicare data. It found that podiatrists performed the majority (99%) of nail excisions, with 6,936 podiatrists conducting these procedures compared to only 4 dermatologists. Podiatrists were also more widely distributed geographically across the US. The study suggests that the lower number of dermatologists performing these procedures may be due to factors such as dermatology training, patient perception, and reimbursement rates for nail excisions.
