TLDR MSCs should be called "master signaling cells" because they mainly help with cell communication and tissue repair.
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are prevalent in the human body and traditionally recognized for their multipotent capabilities. However, their definition as "stem cells" has been debated due to questions about their "stemness" and therapeutic mechanisms. Dr. Arnold I. Caplan proposed redefining MSCs as "medicinal signaling cells," emphasizing their primary role in signaling rather than stem cell functions. This commentary supports Caplan's view and further suggests calling them "master signaling cells," highlighting their crucial role in responding to immune signals and regulating other cells to maintain tissue homeostasis and aid regeneration.
