TLDR Olive oil helps Malassezia globosa overgrow, worsening atopic dermatitis in mice.
The study aimed to establish a mouse model of atopic dermatitis (AD) with overgrowth of Malassezia globosa. Eighteen BALB/c mice were divided into six groups, with three mice per group, to test different conditions. The AD model was induced using MC903, and M. globosa overgrowth was attempted with olive oil and normal saline as vehicles. The AD+Oil/M group showed more severe AD-like lesions, significant hair loss, and increased lesion scoring compared to the AD group. Histopathological analysis revealed increased epidermal thickness, dense inflammatory cell infiltration, and damaged hair follicles in the AD+Oil/M group. M. globosa colonization was confirmed in the stratum corneum and hair shafts using microscopy. The study concluded that a mouse model of AD with M. globosa overgrowth could be successfully established using an olive oil suspension, but not with normal saline.
