TLDR Moose hair mineral levels vary by season and location, indicating environmental impacts.
The study analyzed hair samples from 317 Alaskan moose to assess levels of 10 mineral elements using atomic absorption spectroscopy. The research found seasonal variations in element levels, with peaks in the fall and lows in late winter and early spring. Some element levels were consistently below normal compared to domestic animals. Differences in mineral content were observed based on geographical location, suggesting environmental influences. Notably, significant differences in magnesium, copper, and manganese were found between winter-killed calves and live moose from the same area. The study highlighted the potential of using hair analysis to monitor environmental changes affecting moose.
