TLDR 18% of COVID-19 survivors experience PTSD, with risk factors including age, gender, smoking, and lung damage.
The meta-analysis by Thor Mertz Schou et al. investigated the prevalence of PTSD in COVID-19 patients post-discharge, involving 1,426 patients from 7 studies, and found that 18% experienced PTSD. Identified risk factors included older age, female gender, smoking history, and the extent of lung involvement. The study highlighted the need for addressing mental health and social interaction issues to improve the prognosis and quality of life for COVID-19 survivors. It suggested that enhancing emotional support during hospitalization could help prevent PTSD and called for further research due to the heterogeneity of neuropsychological evaluations across studies.
