TLDR Surgery and antifungal medication are effective for treating Merkel cell carcinoma with fungal infection.
In 2019, a case was reported of an 85-year-old male who presented with a 70-day history of an enlarging painless blue-red nodule on his left knee, which was later diagnosed as Merkel cell carcinoma with a Curvularia lunata fungal infection. This combination of diseases is relatively rare, with few cases reported. The ideal treatment and long-term results of these diseases were yet to be further studied due to the rarity of such cases. The definitive diagnosis was made through pathological examination and laboratory tests. The report concluded that surgical intervention and the use of the antifungal drug voriconazole were viable treatment options for cases of Merkel cell carcinoma with Curvularia lunata infection.
