TLDR Melanoma characteristics vary by age, which could help doctors with diagnosis and prevention.
A retrospective observational study analyzed 189 melanoma patients across three age groups: under 31, 31-60, and over 60 years. The study found that the youngest group showed no correlation with estimated risk factors, with the most common dermoscopic pattern being spitzoid and multicomponent asymmetric. The middle-aged group was the most diverse in terms of risk factors, solar lentiginosis, dermoscopic patterns, topography, histological subtypes, and invasiveness of melanomas. The oldest group showed a strong correlation between solar lentiginosis, NMSC comorbidity, the prevalence of facial melanomas, the dermoscopic pattern of melanoma arising on chronic sun-damaged skin, and regression. The study concluded that age-specific features in melanoma patients could be useful for clinicians and to target secondary prevention efforts.
