TLDR Clear documentation and shared best practices are essential for improving research consistency in pigment cells.
The workshop at the 2025 ESPCR meeting addressed challenges in culturing melanocytes and melanoma cells, emphasizing issues like low-density seeding, temperature fluctuations, and mycoplasma contamination. It highlighted the importance of distinguishing evidence-based practices from consensus-based guidance and noted species- and donor-specific differences as significant sources of variability. Emerging models, such as PSC-derived melanocytes and avian melanoma lines, were recognized for their potential value. The workshop concluded that transparent documentation, explicit reporting standards, and shared best practices are crucial for enhancing reproducibility and advancing pigment cell research.
