TLDR Early detection and treatment of urinary symptoms can help maintain functional ability in older adults.
The study examined the relationship between lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and functional ability in 916 older adults in Japan. It found that in males, lower functional ability was linked to nocturia (≥3 times/night), while in females, it was associated with frequency, urgency, and overactive bladder (OAB). The research emphasized the importance of early detection and treatment of LUTS to preserve functional ability, noting that associations varied by sex, possibly due to differences in comorbidities and physical fatigue. Limitations included potential recall bias and the inability to establish causality due to the study's cross-sectional design.
