TLDR Early detection and treatment of urinary symptoms can help maintain functional ability in older adults.
This study investigated the relationship between lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and functional ability in 916 community-dwelling older adults in Japan. It found that among males, lower functional ability was associated with nocturia (≥3 times/night), while in females, it was linked to frequency, urgency, and overactive bladder (OAB). The study highlighted the importance of early detection and treatment of LUTS to maintain functional ability in older adults, noting that the associations varied by sex, possibly due to differences in comorbidities and physical fatigue.
