TLDR Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is safe and effective for treating obesity in children and teens.
This prospective study evaluated the safety and efficacy of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) in treating morbid obesity in children and adolescents at Al-Azhar University Hospitals from January 2018 to June 2022. The study included 20 patients (15 females and 5 males) aged 12-18 years, all of whom underwent LSG. Results showed a significant reduction in preoperative body mass index (BMI) from 47.13 ± 4.60 to 29.17 ± 3.40 within the first postoperative year, along with improvements in most obesity-related comorbidities. No significant intraoperative or postoperative complications were reported, indicating that LSG is a safe and effective treatment for pediatric obesity.
