TLDR Lupus severely affects daily life, work, and mental health, with many experiencing frequent flares and medication side-effects.
A survey conducted by Arthritis Ireland in late 2023, involving 57 respondents, revealed significant challenges faced by people living with lupus in Ireland. The most common symptoms reported were joint pain (88%) and extreme tiredness (86%). Daily activities, family life, and work were notably impacted, with 74% indicating adverse effects on their careers. Mental health issues such as anxiety (57%), loneliness (45%), and depression (36%) were prevalent. Despite 93% being prescribed medication, 70% still experienced frequent flares, and 45% reported medication side-effects, including nausea (73%) and hair loss (42%). The majority (85%) were aware of self-management techniques, highlighting the need for better treatment and support.
