Lesions in the Axilla After Hair Removal Using Intense Pulsed Light

Martina Alés-Fernández, Laura Victoria, Marco Villalta
TLDR Hair removal with intense pulsed light can cause rare skin lesions that are hard to fully treat.
A 24-year-old woman developed asymptomatic lesions in her axillas after three sessions of intense pulsed light hair removal. Histopathology revealed perifollicular xanthomatosis, leading to a diagnosis of Fox-Fordyce disease. The condition improved with tretinoin 0.05% cream but did not fully resolve. Fox-Fordyce disease is a rare condition characterized by chronic abnormalities of the apocrine sweat glands, often triggered by hair removal procedures. Treatment options are generally unsatisfactory and include various topical and systemic therapies. The authors reported no conflicts of interest.
